Permission Sync is a valuable tool for network administrators who operate Active Directory domain networks.

This plugin works with the Joomla! 1.5 content management system, (version 0.7 supports Joomla! 1.6 & 1.7)
after authenticating domain users with your website, this plugin will modify joomla user permissions to reflect the active directory group name, that you specify in the basic settings of the plugin

The latest version of this plugin supports Joomla! 1.7

How to install:

1) Install plugin extension from joomla backend

2) Edit the plugin settings:

  • Enable
  • Insert Plugin Parameters
    • Add active directory OU to AD Group name parameter
    • Select Joomla user group to complete group mapping

3) Save

Note: Enable & configure these plugins first:

  • User – Joomla! plugin
    • (Auto create must be enabled)
  • Authentication – LDAP

If you liked it it’s ok to say so…

  1. Great post, I’ve learned the to install Joomla only by watching those images.
Love to see more from you.
    Thank you.

  2. Hello Harry,

I am looking for SSO solution, would this plugin help….

    • Yes this supports Single Sign On SSO – But this is because joomla can not to do with the plugin.

  3. Hello, i think that i saw you visited my blog so i came to “return the favor”.I am attempting to find things to improve my web site!I suppose its ok to use a few of your ideas!!

  4. If this supported Joomla 1.7, I would use it

  5. Thank you all for your comments,

I look forward to hearing about success you have had using this plugin.

    Site Admin

  6. This looks great. I would certainly use it if it works with Joomla 1.6. Do you have and idea as to when it is likely to be available?

    • Hi this would be a great tool for our intranet which we are developing on Joomla 1.6 any ideas if you will port this over to 1.6 – 1.7

  7. Hi,

    I’m interested by this plugin.
Could you tell me if there is a possibility to use Active directory group’s instead of Organisation Units ?
Maybe you know something that can help me ?

    Thank you.

  8. This could very well be one of the most critical plugins ever developed for Joomla 1.6 to date. Having solid AD integration opens up a massive amount of possibilities to the community. I hope this is under intense development.

  9. I’m trying to use your extension but I’m already stuck.

I’ve downloaded it and succesfully installed it from the backend of Joomla.

I’ve successfully followed all of your directions. Here is where I’m stuck:

Our AD uses more than one OU. The syntax is as follows (to reach the user group that I’m in):

    ou=tech services,ou=lec,dc=domain,dc=extension

Under these circumstances, can I configure your plugin to work with my AD? We have many, many OUs (probably 30); I see fields for only 3 in your plugin. Assuming I can get one to work, can I repeat the steps for the other 29?

I hope this makes sense and you can help me. Thanks!

    • Are you saying it is only working for one ou, and no more?

  10. Is there a special way to note the AD Group Name? The plugin does not seem to work in my case.
Maybe you can give a more detailed example of how to do the mapping?

    • the “AD Group Name” is just the directoy name in your AD, it is case sensitive.
If your not getting errors thats a good sign, you can debug by uncommenting the plg_permission.php

      • Debugging shows following error message:

        Ldap enabled. host =

        Ldap Parameters 389 1
        [permissionSync] Cannot bind
        [permissionSync] LDAP bind failed…
permission sync plugin – Fired onAfterStoreUser

        • The problem is probably your port 389.
Try using 3268 it should fix this.

          Protocol: LDAP

          Port (TCP/UDP): 3268 (TCP)
Description: Global catalog. The Windows 2000 Active Directory global catalog (which is really a domain controller “role”) listens on TCP port 3268. When you are troubleshooting issues that may be related to a global catalog, connect to port 3268 in LDP.

          Protocol: LDAP/SSL

          Port (TCP/UDP): 3269 (TCP)
Description: Global catalog over SSL. Applications that connect to TCP port 3269 of a global catalog server can transmit and receive SSL encrypted data. To configure a global catalog to support SSL, you must install a Computer certificate on the global catalog.

  11. Joomla 1.6 Version of permission sync is being considered

  12. Will you be making a Joomla 1.6 native version?

  13. Your tool looks great!
What about a vrsion for Joomla 1.6?

  14. Hope you find this tool useful!
Please leave as much of a description of errors/problems you are experiencing as possible.

  15. What an interesting plugin!
I don’t particularly use Joomla, but if it has LDAP integration I might have to have a play with this.
