Consider adding a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page to your website, it provides a great way for users to find you. Often users search for questions rather than answers. Providing information addressing your potential visitors needs or problems in the form of questions and answers is a great way to assist busy people.
Example:
Question: When you market yourself to the online community, who’s needs are you thinking of?
Answer: My target audience of course. If this was not immediately obvious to you then you should consider doing market analysis and website usability tests. To do this:
- Create a persona of your potential visitors.
- Take down details that majority of your visitors will have, this information should not be limited just to demographic details you need to dig deeper and find out the culture and personality types that you intend to communicate with.
- Once you have compiled this information it could be useful to then contact these people in person with a survey to confirm that your intentions could indeed be helping your target audience
- Content accessibility through popular search engines should be tested
- Find out how usable and effective your content is from the information gathered in the first step
There is no doubt that usability testing should be done before websites are built, however if you have over complicated systems there is a big chance that you are simply wasting your visitors time.

Who can afford to lose their computer?

If you can afford to lose your computer, that’s great!
But what about the information, because after all you can’t replace your memories like you can a computer.
Hard drives store our precious info, unfortunately these have moving parts, which simply can not last forever. When they do go to the hard drive cemetery make sure you don’t bury your data along with it.
There are many ways to protect yourself from this, the one i’m going to explain is free.
- Get yourself an old USB stick, or purchase a new one. 4GB will be plenty enough, although if you have photos you should get an external hard drive. Alternatively store your information online, this is a safer approach during the freak chance your house gets hit by lightening or destroyed in a fire. ( You may have lost your house but at least you have the photo of you when you use to be happy )
- Install automated software to backup your data, I suggest Cobian Backup, it’s free and it works extremely well.
